Exhibition / Moira Ricci / “Lookaftering” / Marubi Museum in Shkodër / February 23rd – 1st of June 2018

“The meaning of “Lookaftering” as an act of caring, somehow evoked in absence, contemplates the unusual correlation between the gaze and time in a continuity given by the “-ing” suffix which extracts this word from the context of the vocabulary and seems to keep flowing a past that by definition, does not exist anymore. We are dealing with a made-up word and a condition where, from a potential gaze stuck in time, derives a potential past that remains open and possible. Almost as the Greek conception, who according to Roland Barthes, “entered into Death backward: what they had before them was their past”.
From a similar perspective, where the atmosphere of “another time” corresponds to that of an “altered” time, the exhibition of Moira Ricci brings to the Marubi Museum two works related to her private life. The artist gets back to the images of her motherindirect co-author of the stories they tell us- in a discrete protagonism, keeping an almost obsessive and impossible dialogue with them.
From the language of photography to the video, the artist is pending between a time that flows and turns back and another time which is definitely stuck. In each work, contexts, environments and situations build a gallery of images where Moira has not been present or where she assists through somebody else’s point of view. In the case of the video, this is done by the recordings of the mother who used to follow her in dance shows or competition. Here Moira gets back to her choreographies and to the longstanding relationship to dancing. She shows us a story which has been synchronized with the fresh and unrestrained optimism from one of the soundtracks of the movie “Flashdance”. Far from the exhilaration of the accomplished dream of the main character, here the artist’s aspiration is much more in a dialogue with her nostalgia, perceived even in some distorted sounds of the VHS cassette which slightly interfere with the projection.
Next to these images we have the photographic series “20.12.53 – 10.08.04” where the dialogue between the gazes is inverted. Now we find the artist who is facing the dramatic event of the death of her mother, trying to chase and approach her in the only place possible: the old family photographs where she literally gets inside. To become part of them, she needs to perform, to take self-portraits, to find the right image and place; to wear clothes and costumes from different periods of time; to analyse situations and photo textures; to match up the proper lighting or the colour temperature and sometimes even wait for the suitable season for shooting… The final stage is a series of manipulated photographs where the artist stimulates as true and real, a curated illusion of a presence poetically and intentionally disguised only by her melancholic vigilance and isolation from a time which seems to keep on flowing in every photograph, but not in her.”

“Domethënia e fjalës ‘Lookaftering’, duke iu referuar fillimisht një përkujdesjeje në akt e sipër (e të evokuar në njëfarë mënyre në mungesë), na projekton gjithashtu te marrëdhënia e çuditshme mes shikimit e kohës, vazhdimësia e së cilës, dhënë nga mbrapashtesa ‘-ing’ që e shkëput prej realitetit të fjalorit, duket se mban ende në veprim atë pjesë kohore që për definicion nuk është më. Kemi të bëjmë me një fjalë të përveçme, ku shikimit të ndalur e pa kohë, megjithëse të disponueshëm, i rrjedh një e kryer potencialisht e hapur dhe e mundur. Pak a shumë si në idenë e grekëve, që sipas Roland Barthes ‘hynin te Vdekja së prapthi: ajo çka kishin përpara ishte e kaluara e tyre.’
Drejt një perspektive të ngjashme, ku atmosfera e një ‘kohe tjetër’ i përkon një kohe të ‘tjetërsuar’, orientohet edhe ekspozita e artistes italiane Moira Ricci në Muzeun ‘Marubi’, me dy vepra të realizuara kryesisht nga ngjarje të jetës së saj private, të cilave u rikthehet me një protagonizëm diskret e në një dialog të pamundur, gati-gati obsesiv, me imazhet e nanës – bashkëautore indirekte e momenteve që ata rrëfejnë. Nga gjuha e fotografisë tek ajo e videos, qëndrimi i saj mbetet pezull mes një kohe të rrjedhshme e të kthyeshme, e një tjetre që e gjen përfundimisht të shtangur. Në secilën nga veprat, kontekstet, ambientet e situatat ndërtojnë një galeri me imazhe ku artistja s’ka qenë e pranishme ose asiston përmes vështrimit të dikujt. Në rastin e videos, këtë e bëjnë filmimet e nanës në kohën kur e ndiqte në shfaqje e konkurse. Në to Moira rekuperon koreografitë e veta e marrëdhënien e kahershme me kërcimin. Një histori që e sjell të sinkronizuar me optimizmin e shpenguar të njërës prej kolonave zanore të filmit “Flashdance”; por ndryshe prej ekzaltimit të një ëndrre të realizuar që shpërfaq personazhi në film, aspirata e saj e dikurshme i flet më shumë një nostalgjie, të perceptueshme deri në zhurmat e vogla të videokasetave VHS që e trazojnë lehtë projeksionin.
Përbri tij shtrihet në vijë të njëtrajtshme cikli fotografik ‘20. 12. 53 – 10. 08. 04’, ku invertohet edhe dialogu i shikimeve të tyre. Tani është Moira, e gjendur para ndarjes nga jeta të nanës, që përpiqet ta ndjekë figurën e saj, e t’i afrohet në të vetmin vend akoma të mundur për të: në fotografitë e vjetra të familjes, brenda të cilave futet në kuptimin më direkt të fjalës. Për t’u bërë pjesë organike e tyre, asaj i duhet të inskenojë jo pak, e të vetëfotografohet; të gjurmojë imazhin, vendin e përshtatshëm që e pret; të kamuflojë veshje e kostume të periudhave të ndryshme; të zbërthejë sipërfaqe e tekstura fotosh; të bëjë të koinçidojë dritën, temperaturën e ngjyrave e ndonjëherë të presë edhe stinën e përshtatshme për të realizuar shkrepjen… Në stacionin final të procesit, në këtë seri me fotomontazhe, autorja stimulon si të vërtetë e real një iluzion tejet të kuruar pranie, të ‘paditur’ poetikisht (e qëllimisht) vetëm nga vigjilenca e saj melankolike, e izolimi në një kohë që vepron në çdo skaj të fotove, përveçse mbi të.”
