Exhibition / “PHOTONS from the Sky to the Sea” / Galeria e bregdetit / September 26th – October 24th 2020 / Vlorë
“Photons from the Sky to the Sea” is an exhibition curated by Donika Çina with the support of the Swedish Art Grants Committee, displayed for the public in the premises of “Galeria e Bregdetit” in Radhimë, Vlorë. Relying heavily on photography, either directly or indirectly, the exhibition was constructed as a journey through the feelings of the participating artists regarding the light, and also a little regarding the sea.
Coincidentally or not, the interiors of “Galeria e Bregdetit” match with the theme of the exhibition. Fully illuminated by a strong white light, the first room displays the works of Johan Österholm, Lotta Tornroth and Niklas Holmgren. Behind the iridescent curtains, a second room in semi-darkness introduces us to Ylva Carlgren, Mikaela Steby Stenfalk and Sjoerd ter Borg. The works are not interrelated, but neither are they completely separate from each other. Donika Çina guides the visitors through the works by providing information on them and the creative process.
Light
Johan Österholm (1/2) – Untitled lantern Pieces – Object
Four objects are displayed in the entrance of the exhibition. They consist on small pieces of the sky, photographed by Johan Österholm with an “archaic” method according to Donika Çina, by bringing them on lantern glass painted with silver gelatin. He emphasized the contrast between the dark and the pollution caused by lights. In large and technologically advanced metropolises where light prevails, starry nights are not visible in the dark.
Lotta Törnroth (1/2) – I Wait as a Lighthouse – Photographs
The darkness where the Skandinavian coast lies is followed by tragedy and Lotta Törnroth in her photographs is positioned in the places where a fatality occurred. In each of the photographs she holds a light in her hand. Just like the lighthouse that brings hope and guidance, she sheds light on the pain of the family members who are always waiting for someone to return from the darkness of the sea and to find their way. In a dark place the light could be God himself. It is not clear whether Lotta Törnroth wants to give hope or to shed light on tragic events so as not to forget those who left in the dark. Either way, her photography leaves room for everyone’s imagination, but also transmits a sense of freezing cold that could permeate all visitors.
Niklas Holmgren – YL I & II – Painting
A large hyperrealistic painting by Niklas Holmgren and a small version of it stand side by side. “YL I” could be easily mistaken for a photograph from a distance, but it is a very detailed oil painting, to the point that according to Holmgren it takes about 6 months of work.
While observing the painting and the nuances in its background, it seems that Niklas Holmgren does not intend to transmit an image seen by naked eye, but through the camera and the manual focus that the camera enables. He played with the light angle , in order to share with the visitors the despair, the anxiety of the primary subject and the subject in the background. A faded, cold, pungent light penetrates the subject’s body in the first painting and a clearly delineated red light covers its copy in the adjacent painting.
Darkness
Johan Österholm (2/2) – Night into Day – Photographs
Inside the dark space of the exhibition we find ourselves next to the second work of Johan Österholm. A device projects photographs on the wall, which show the lanterns of different cities of Germany. Once upon a time these lanterns used to illuminate, but now they are out of function. They stay in the city as memorabilia, as souvenirs from the past and often serve as a shelter for birds.
Ylva Carlgreen – Spatial Line – Watercolor
At first glance, Ylva Carlgren’s paintings look similar to pictures of foggy doors or windows. It remains unclear where the light in them emanates from and where the subject is located. She uses the method of blurriness to create the five paintings that play with the perception of darkness, light and the interconnectedness between them.
Lotta Törnroth (2/2) – Imaginary Islands – Object
The second part of Lotta Tornroth’s work brings back the sea in a new form. In her practice, Lotta Törnroth selects pieces of icebergs from the seas of the world and lets them melt on a white sheet, leaving traces on it. These are the Imaginary Islands. This time she collected the water from the Adriatic Sea, froze it and repeated the process. By adding a little blue pigment, the Imaginary Islands mark the white sheets, exposed on the thread-hung tiles from the ceiling.
Mikaela Steby Stenfalk (1/2) – Collective Collection – Installation 3D
In the corner of the room hangs an object which must be seen standing under it, with your head facing up. By using a 3D printer, Mikaela Steby Stenfalk has created a rectangular shape that summarizes photos of the Vatican Dome, shot by tourists. After placing them side by side like a puzzle, she recreated the plastic cupola with these pictures. The Collective Collection is the collective and digital memory of Vatican visitors.
Mikaela Steby Stenfalk (2/2) dhe Sjoerd ter Borg – Three Wise men from East – Audiovisual Installation
On a screen at the end of the exhibition, Donika Çina shows how Mikaela Steby Stenfalk in collaboration with Sjoerd ter Borg realized a 3-dimensional digital journey with photos taken by people in different neighborhoods of Amsterdam. Amsterdam is a bustling, energetic and extremely modern city. Day by day new trends arise in its streets and the city changes shape as people hasten to catch up with it. Sjoerd ter Borg has built a virtual installation, to which he has attached photos posted on social networks that portray Amsterdam bars. In the background you can hear a voice that explains how the specific appearance of these places is not accidental, but part of a well thought urbanization strategy, which in this case aims to transform an area from normal to chic. The look of the bars attracts people who fit in them, who in the digital age are investing in sharing impressions online and consequently, bringing in similar visitors. In the effort to cater to the needs of these new customers, the surrounding businesses will either adapt or leave. Their moving away also changes the identity of the area.

“Fotonet nga qielli drejt detit”, është një ekspozitë e kuruar nga Donika Çina me mbështetjen e Swedish Art Grants Committee dhe e shfaqur për publikun pranë ambienteve të Galerisë së Bregdetit, në Radhimë, Vlorë. E bazuar kryesisht në fotografi, qoftë drejtpërsëdrejti apo tërthorazi, ekspozita u ndërtua si një udhëtim mes përjetimeve të artistëve të ftuar ndaj dritës, pak dhe ndaj detit.
Ambientet e brendshme të Galerisë së Bregdetit përkojnë, rastësisht ose jo, me temën e ekspozitës. Dhoma e parë, plotësisht e ndriçuar me dritë të fortë të bardhë shfaq punët e Johan Österholm, Lotta Tornroth dhe Niklas Holmgren. Pas perdeve irideshente, një dhomë e dytë në gjysmerrësirë na prezanton edhe me Ylva Carlgren, Mikaela Steby Stenfalk dhe Sjoerd ter Borg. Veprat nuk janë të ndërlidhura, por as të ndara plotësisht nga njëra-tjetra. Donika Çina udhëheq vizitorët drejt veprave duke ofruar informacion mbi to dhe procesin krijues.
Dritë
Johan Österholm (1/2) – Untitled lantern Pieces (Copa Fenerash Pa Titull) – Objekt
Katër objekte shfaqen në hyrje të ekspozitës. Ato konsistojnë në copëza të qiellit, të fotografuara nga Johan Österholm me metodën që Donika Çina e quan “arkaike”, duke i sjellë në xhama fenerash të lyer me xhelatinë argjendi. Ai ka theksuar kontrastin mes errësirës dhe ndotjes nga drita. Në metropolet e mëdha dhe teknologjikisht të avancuara, ku drita mbizotëron, netët e yjëzuara nuk duken në errësirë.
Lotta Törnroth (1/2) – I Wait as a Lighthouse (Pres si një Far) – Fotografi
Errësira ku shtrihet bregdeti skandinav shoqërohet nga tragjedia dhe Lotta Törnroth në fotografitë e saj pozicionohet në vendet ku ka ndodhur një fatalitet. Në secilën fotografi mban një dritë në dorë. Ashtu si fari që ofron shpresë dhe guidë, ajo hedh dritë mbi dhimbjen e familjarëve, të cilët mbeten përherë në pritje që dikush të kthehet nga errësira e detit, të gjejë rrugën. Në një vend të errët, drita mund të jetë vetë Zoti. Nuk është e qartë nëse Lotta Törnroth dëshiron të japë shpresë apo të hedhë dritë mbi ngjarjet tragjike, për të mos i lënë në harresë ata që u larguan në errësirë. Sido të jetë, fotografia e saj lë vend për imagjinatën e secilit, por përçon një ndjesi acari që ka shanse t’i përshkojë të gjithë vizitorët.
Niklas Holmgren – YL I & II – Pikturë
Një pikturë e madhe hiperrealiste nga Niklas Holmgren dhe një version i vogël i saj, qëndrojnë krah njëra-tjetrës. “YL I” duket lehtë si një fotografi nga larg, por është një pikturë tejet e detajuar vaji, e tillë që për Holmgren kërkon rreth 6 muaj punë. Duke e vërejtur pikturën dhe sfumaturat në sfondin e saj, duket se Niklas Holmgren nuk synon që të përçojë një imazh të parë me sy të lirë, por nëpërmjet aparatit fotografik dhe fokusit manual që aparati mundëson. Ai ka manipuluar këndin në të cilin bie drita, në mënyrë që të ndajë më vizitorët dëshpërimin, angështinë e subjektit primar dhe subjektit në sfond. Një dritë e zbardhur, e ftohtë dhe e athët përshkon trupin e subjektit në pikturën e parë dhe një dritë e kuqe e pavijëzuar qartë e mbulon kopjen e saj në pikturën ngjitur.
Errësirë
Johan Österholm (2/2) – Night into Day (Nata në Ditë) – Fotografi
Në brendi të ambientit të errët gjendemi pranë veprës së dytë nga Johan Österholm. Një aparat projekton në mur fotografi, të cilat paraqesin fenerët e qyteteve të ndryshme të Gjermanisë. Dikur këta fenerë bënin dritë, por tashmë janë jashtë funksionit. Ata qëndrojnë në qytet si memorabilia, si suvenire nga e shkuara dhe shpesh shërbejnë si vendstrehim për zogjtë.
Ylva Carlgreen – Spatial Line (Vija Hapësinore) – Akuarel
Në shikim të parë, pikturat e Ylva Carlgren ngjasojnë fotografi dyersh ose dritaresh të mjegullta. Mbetet e paqartë nga buron drita në to dhe ku ndodhet subjekti. Çfokusimi është mënyra se si ajo ka realizuar pesë pikturat që luajnë me perceptimin e errësirës, dritës dhe ndërlidhjes mes tyre.
Lotta Törnroth (2/2) – Imaginary Islands (ishuj Imagjinarë) – Objekt
Pjesa e dytë e veprës së Lotta Tornroth risjell detin në një formë të re. Në praktikën e saj, Lotta Törnroth përzgjedh copëza ajsbergësh nga detet e botës, të cilët i lë të shkrijnë mbi një fletë të bardhë, duke lënë gjurmë mbi të. Këta janë Ishujt Imagjinarë. Kësaj rradhe ajo mblodhi ujin e Detit Adriatik, e ngriu dhe e përsëriti procesin. Duke i shtuar pak pigment blu, Ishujt Imagjinarë shënjojnë fletët e bardha, të ekspozuar në pllaka të varura me fije nga tavani.
Mikaela Steby Stenfalk (1/2) – Collective Collection (Koleksion Kolektiv) – Instalacion 3D
Në kënd të dhomës varet një objekt i cili duhet parë duke qëndruar nën të, me kokën lart. Mikaela Steby Stenfalk, duke përdorur një printer 3D, ka krijuar një formë drejtkëndore që përmbledh fotografitë e Kupolës së Vatikanit, të shkrepura nga turistët. Pasi i ka vendosur pranë njëra-tjetrës si një puzzle, ajo ka rikrijuar kupolën plastike me këto fotografi. Koleksioni Kolektiv është kujtesa kolektive e digjitale e vizitorëve të Vatikanit.
Mikaela Steby Stenfalk (2/2) dhe Sjoerd ter Borg – Three Wise men from East (Tre Burra të Mençur nga Lindja) – Instalacion Audiovizual
Në një ekran në fund të ekspozitës, Donika Çina tregon se si Mikaela Steby Stenfalk, në bashkëpunim me Sjoerd ter Borg, kanë realizuar një rrugëtim digjital 3-dimensional me fotografi të shkrepura nga njerëzit nëpër lagjet e ndryshme të Amsterdamit. Amsterdami është një qytet i zhurmshëm, i shpejtë dhe tejet modern. Dita-ditës tendenca të reja lindin në rrugët e tij dhe qyteti ndërron formë teksa njerëzit shpejtojnë të kapin hapin e tij. Sjoerd ter Borg ka ndërtuar një instalacion virtual, në të cilin ka bashkangjitur fotografi të hedhura në rrjete sociale dhe që paraqesin bare të Amsterdamit. Në sfond dëgjohet një zë që shpjegon se si pamja specifike që kanë këto vende nuk është rastësore, por pjesë e një strategjie të mirëmenduar urbanizimi, e cila në rastin konkret synon transformimin e një zone nga normale në shik. Pamja e bareve tërheq njerëz që përshtaten me to, të cilët në epokën digjitale investohen në ndarjen e përshtypjeve në internet dhe si pasojë, sjellin vizitorë të ngjashëm. Në përpjekje për të ushqyer nevojat e këtyre konsumatorëve të rinj, bizneset përreth ose do të përshtaten, ose do të largohen. Largimi i tyre sjell dhe ndryshimin e identitetit të zonës.
